What is the public transport in Melbourne like?

I have heard many good things and many bad things about the public transport system in Melbourne and would just like the option of a local resident as to what the state of public transport is like in Melbourne. Is it easy enough to get around the city and suburbs, is it expensive, do the services run frequently and are there anything that I should watch out for.
