Does Sydney have a good public transport system?

I am going to be travelling to Sydney in the near future and am not going to have a car with me so I was curious about the public transport system in Sydney and how comprehensive it is. Can any local resident of Sydney please tell me if it easy to get around the city and suburbs, do the services operate regularly and is it expensive to travel aroune.
